An advisory in regard to "rar" attachments

Oct 20/08

The ITS department would like to advise the Laurier community to not
open attachments with a filename ending in "rar" unless they are 100%
sure of the veracity of the contents.

On Monday October 20 many members of the Laurier community
received an email purporting to be from UPS. The email had an "rar"
attachment. The email claimed that the attachment was a UPS invoice and
asked the recipient to open and print the attachment/invoice. In fact
the attachment contained malware that would attack the recipient's
computer if the attachment was opened.

To our knowledge no one opened the attachment.
